Jira risk matrix and risk register apps compared
Jira has no built-in risk register, so every team ends up choosing between a spreadsheet and one of about six Marketplace apps. This page puts the real monthly cost of each next to its rating and its architecture — and says plainly where the established apps beat ours.

What each app costs
Monthly total for the whole site, cheapest first after our own row. Ratings are the Marketplace average at the date above.
| App | 25 users | 100 users | 500 users | 2,000 users | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| FastRisk — Risk Matrix & RAID Log for Jira (ours) | $5 | $20 | $50.50 | $95.50 | no reviews yet |
| Risk Register, Risk Management for Jira & Confluence | $32.50 | $130 | $317.50 | $622.50 | 4.78 |
| Hedge: Risk Management, Risk Register & Risk Matrix for Jira | $35 | $140 | $401 | $856 | 4.58 |
| Risk Register (ProjectBalm) | $43.75 | $175 | $380 | $705 | 4.51 |
| SoftComply Risk Manager (Basic) | $75.75 | $303 | $458.50 | $643.50 | 4.46 |
| SoftComply Risk Manager Plus | $100 | $400 | $860 | $1,420 | 4.88 |
The spread at 100 users is $20 to $400 — a factor of twenty for a category where every app draws the same 5×5 grid. The reason is not features; it is that most of these apps are priced per user across your whole site, and a risk register is opened by a project manager, a programme lead and a handful of steering-committee members. Nobody else on your site will ever look at it.
Which one to shortlist
- Regulated product development — medical devices, ISO 14971, safety cases: shortlist SoftComply and stop reading. It is built for that, it has the traceability structures those standards demand, and the price is not the deciding factor when an auditor is. FastRisk does not compete here and does not pretend to.
- An established, feature-rich register with a long track record: Risk Register (ProjectBalm) and Hedge. Both are mature, both are well reviewed, both will do more than FastRisk on day 90.
- A steering meeting that needs a heat map next Thursday, on risks that are already Jira issues, at a price nobody has to approve: FastRisk. That is the whole design brief.
The real incumbent is a spreadsheet
In most organisations the honest comparison is not between two Marketplace apps. It is between an app and the risk spreadsheet that somebody updates the morning of the steering meeting. Against that competitor, price is not a feature — it is the entire objection. A $175/month line item invites a conversation about whether the spreadsheet was really so bad; $20 does not.
That is why FastRisk is priced the way it is, and it is the one thing on this page we would ask you to weigh against the ratings column. A 4.8★ app you did not buy protects nothing.
Risks as Jira issues vs. a separate register
This is the real architectural fork in the category, and it matters more than the feature lists.
- A separate register stores risks in the app's own data store. You get purpose-built fields, workflows and reports, and the app can model things Jira cannot. The cost is that your risks are not Jira issues: they do not appear in JQL, on boards, in your existing dashboards, or in a Jira export, and they leave with the app.
- Risks as issues — FastRisk's model — stores likelihood,
impact, score, RAID type, mitigation and review date in real Jira custom
fields on issues you already have.
"Risk score" >= 15works in Jira's own search, in a saved filter, on a board and in any dashboard gadget. Jira's history records every change. The data survives the app being uninstalled. The cost is that FastRisk can only ever be as expressive as a Jira issue with six extra fields on it.
Which is right depends on one question: do you need a risk system, or do you need the risks on your existing work to be visible? If it is the second, the separate-register apps are solving a problem you do not have.
Where your risk data lives
Risk registers hold the sentences an organisation least wants to read aloud — "key supplier is single-sourced", "the migration has no rollback". That makes the architecture question a procurement question.
FastRisk runs entirely on Atlassian Forge with no egress permissions declared at all: there is no outbound domain in its manifest and no inbound endpoint, so there is no path off your tenant. It qualifies for Atlassian's Runs on Atlassian programme, which is a platform-enforced badge — a vendor cannot claim it while running code elsewhere. In practice that is the difference between a security review and a look at a badge. Several of the other apps in this table are also Forge-based; check each listing's badge rather than taking our word for the category.
FastRisk additionally stores no personal data of any kind — not a name, not an email address, not an Atlassian account ID. Risk owners are read from Jira when a page renders and never written to app storage. Our privacy page enumerates that product by product.
What the other apps do better than FastRisk
If we only listed our advantages this page would be an advert, so:
- They have reviews and we do not. Risk Register has thousands of installs and years of feedback behind that 4.51★. FastRisk is new. That is a real difference and the free tier is the only honest answer we have to it.
- Compliance frameworks. SoftComply's structures for ISO 14971 and similar standards are not something FastRisk approximates.
- Confluence. BOJA’s Risk Register, Risk Management for Jira & Confluence spans both products (check its listing for whether that needs a second licence). FastRisk is Jira only.
- Depth of reporting. FastRisk gives you a matrix, a RAID register with trend sparklines, a dashboard gadget, and CSV and PNG export. The mature apps go further, and if you need a formal risk report generated for you, they are the answer.
- We hold no security certification. No SOC 2, no ISO 27001, no independent penetration test. Our security page says so in those words. The architecture is the argument; the paperwork is not there.
How these numbers were produced
Every price here was read from
/rest/2/addons/{key}/pricing/cloud/live — the public endpoint the
Marketplace renders its own pricing from — by a script kept in this site's
repository, so no competitor's price list is ever retyped from a screenshot.
Totals assume commercial licences, monthly billing, and that every user on the
site is charged above the free tier, which is how Atlassian bills. Annual
billing is roughly 17% cheaper on every app in the table. See
how Atlassian app billing works for the mechanics.
If a number here is wrong or has moved, tell us and we will correct it — including in our own favour or against it.
